This Is the Life for Me!

Story:

I had a plaque in my office that said, “I Long for Salty Air in My Hair.” It prompted much ribbing from my cohorts as our little city was nestled amid rolling hills and sprawling farm lands right in the middle of the US. Salt water was very far away. But in my dreams I heard the crashing of waves, the cry of gulls, the call of a voice that matched no one I knew.

At the end of my yearly evaluation, my boss sat quietly for a moment, then said, “Given your skills and work history, we have an offer for you. We’re opening a new branch office on the west coast and we’d like you to consider being part of the team there. The location is a bit remote but we think we’ll be successful there. Before you answer, I’d like you to meet the person in charge of this project.” At my stunned nod, she left the room, returning quickly with someone younger than I expected, with a good, strong face and laughing eyes. When his hand gripped mine and he spoke, the world tipped. It was all I could do to follow the conversation from there, to focus and seem intelligent. For the voice was the voice of my dreams and my whole body hummed with joy.

You can guess the end of this part of my story - a whirlwind of change, learning curves, doing things I never imagined I could do. Around it all, love bloomed. I discovered the feel of sand between my toes, salty breezes in my hair and a warm hand wrapped around mine.
